In this article, we explore how smart cities enable responsible AI-driven traffic management, share our findings, and discuss the associated cybersecurity requirements.

Digitalization and AI in traffic management are on everyone's minds these days...and for good reason. The potential is enormous.

But here's what we keep asking ourselves (and maybe you do too): How do all these smart systems actually work? And even more importantly: how secure and trustworthy are they?

Let's dive into that.

AI In action: from buzzword to real impact

Since the beginning of 2024, SWARCO has launched several AI-powered traffic management systems worldwide. Let's zoom in on the Nordic region, not as prototypes, but as real-world, operational systems that improve traffic every day.

In Køge, Denmark, our field study at the Ringvejen–Søndreviadukt intersection using our adaptive platform SmartAI delivered:

  • 47% reduction in average delay
  • 39% fewer stops
  • 22% reduction in CO₂ emissions

In Reykjavík, Iceland, we've installed Europe's first AI-powered intersection, where the SmartAI system combines LiDAR detection and real-time adaptive control.

In Oslo and Trondheim, Norway, SmartAI is now being enhanced with Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAM) — enabling intersections to communicate directly with connected vehicles for even greater precision.

These projects illustrate something crucial: AI in traffic management isn't just a concept anymore. It's already cutting delays, reducing emissions, and setting a new standard for sustainable mobility.

Not just smart, also responsible.

Whenever we integrate AI into public infrastructure, two key things come to mind: cybersecurity and ethics.

We're not just hopping on the AI trend.

Our Innovation Hub has developed a clear AI and Digital Twin Position Statement that defines how we use AI responsibly and outlines our principles of transparency, fairness, and trust.

Our IT and cybersecurity experts ensure digital safety isn't an add-on feature — it's built into the entire ecosystem.

From ideation to deployment to maintenance, cybersecurity is woven into every layer of our mobility solutions.

A great example is our AI test field in Baden-Württemberg, which drew the attention of the region's Transport Minister. It showcases how AI-based detection, edge computing, and connected sensors can be deployed safely and transparently — without compromising data integrity or user privacy.

The future of traffic management is a connected one

And it starts now.

As cities rethink mobility, one truth is becoming impossible to ignore: Responsible AI is important, but it won't shape the future on its own. We need:

  • Systems that speak the same language.
  • Platforms that scale across regions.
  • Technology that is ethical, secure, and built for the people it serves.

Whether you're a traffic engineer balancing on-the-ground realities or a city transport leader shaping long-term strategy, the next chapter won't be written by algorithms alone. It will be written by the choices we make today about openness, trust, and collaboration.

Cities don't just need 'smart systems'; they need smart systems that citizens can trust.

Your turn: Let's shape the next chapter of connected mobility
