Safer Roads. Greener Future #4: Inside the Traffic Light

Digital twins are now firmly on the agenda for local authorities in the UK. With up to £30 million available through the Department for Transport’s Integrated Transport Digital Twin programme, the key question for eligible authorities is not whether the technology sounds promising, but what a practical, deliverable project actually looks like in the real world.

This deployment demonstrates how cities can gradually modernize their traffic infrastructure without losing sight of long-term objectives. By expanding an already connected network with next-generation traffic controllers, Rome is creating the technological foundation for more intelligent traffic operations in the years ahead. The project also highlights the growing adoption of SWARCO's ITC-3 technology across Italy, reflecting increasing confidence in scalable, future-ready traffic management solutions.

In the German city of Landau in der Pfalz, prediction of congestion, emissions and testing infrastructure changes are no longer a vision for the future — it is reality. A couple of months ago, SWARCO has deployed a fully operational Digital Twin that continuously mirrors the city's traffic network, providing real-time insights, short-term forecasts, and scenario-based decision support. Unlike many Digital Twin initiatives that remain at the concept or pilot stage, Landau in der Pfalz's solution is live, integrated into daily operations, and actively supporting traffic management decisions.
